Many businesses offer free public Wi-Fi as a way to attract customers, but it’s a modern convenience that could inconveniently lead to all of your personal and financial data being stolen.
If you do need to use a public Wi-Fi connection, here are a few ways you can minimize risk:
Phishing is becoming more and more common as criminals get more sophisticated in their efforts to steal your identity. It occurs when someone attempts to bait you with a text or email that looks very similar to what a real company would send, all in hopes that you’ll click a phony link and go to their phony site.
If you get an email or a text you weren’t expecting, verify it by calling or emailing the sender in a new message.
Never reply to the message you just received—if it’s fake, it’ll go right back to a scammer who will, of course, lie to you and tell you everything’s great.
